Astronomy and space exploration

• Sinope, the outermost known moon of Jupiter was discovered by either Seth Barnes Nicholson at Lick Observatory or by P. Melotta at Greenwich, England.
• A 76 cm refracting telescope is built at Allegheny Observatory in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. It is the fifth largest refractor in the world.
• Robert Goddard begins building rockets.
• Walter Adams determines an incredibly high density for Sirius B.

Physics

• James Franck and Gustav Hertz observe atomic excitation
• Ernest Rutherford suggests that the positively charged atomic nucleus contains protons

Technology

• W. H. Carrier patents design of air conditioner
• Kodak introduced the Autographic system.

Nobel Prizes

• Max von Laue is awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics
• Theodore William Richards is awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry
• Robert Bárány is awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine

• February 17 - Armin Kutzsche, future medical researcher
• May 19 - Max Perutz, future biologist
• October 21 - Martin Gardner, future writer on mathematics and games
• October 28 - Jonas Salk, future medical researcher
• Yakov Borisovich Zel'dovich, astrophysicist

Deaths

• December 24 - John Muir, geologist, ecologist, founder of the Sierra Club.
