The Alberta Oilers, a Canadian hockey team, are now known as the Edmonton Oilers.
They were called the Alberta Oilers because they had played in both Edmonton and Calgary and because Alberta produces much oil, but they eventually changed their name to the Edmonton Oilers. This was their inaugural season in 1972-1973, their first season in the now-defunct World Hockey Association. The Oilers went on to play in the NHL after the WHA had to merge with the NHL. The Edmonton Oilers went on to become the most successful franchise in the mid-late 1980s after signing Wayne Gretzky, argueably the greatest hockey player ever, along with Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, Grant Fuhr and Andy Moog, winning 5 Stanley Cups from 1984 to 1990 in sports.
