Aleksei Grigorievich Stakhanov, a miner in the Soviet Union, became a celebrity in the Soviet Union in 1935 as part of a movement that was intended to increase worker productivity and demonstrate the superiority of socialist economic systems.
Stakhanov was born in Lugova near Oryol. In 1935, he was held up as a "model Soviet worker" as part of an effort to increase productivity among workers and peasants. In reality, the achievements of Stakhanov were exaggerated for propaganda purposes, by adding the production of his co-workers to his own total.
