An anticholinesterase is any drug that inhibits the enzyme cholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine, so increasing both the level and duration of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Anticholinesterases are used in the treatment of myasthenia gravis, to increase neuromuscular transmission.
