Appellation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

An appellation in its broadest sense is a name or designation. With respect to wine, it refers to a geographical-based term used to identify where the grapes for a wine were grown. In France, the full term is Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée and goes beyond geography (and wine).

The equivalent in the United States is the American Viticultural Area; in the European Union, it is the Protected Designation of Origin.
