Audacity is a free digital audio editor that runs on the Linux, UNIX, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems. The source code for Audacity is released under the GNU General Public License. The GUI for the editor has been produced using the wxWindows library.

Some of Audacity's features include:

  • support for importing and exporting to WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis file formats
  • support for recording and playing sounds
  • sound editing via Cut, Copy, Paste (with unlimited Undo)
  • track mixing
  • inserting and applying effects to sound tracks
  • built-in amplitude envelope editor
  • bass boost
  • custom noise removal

The latest version of Audacity as of November 2003 is 1.2.0-pre3.
