Bearberry is a shrub of the manzanita genus, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng. It is called bearberry because bears supposedly enjoy eating its fruit. It is also called kinnikinnick or mealberry. It grows in temperate climates. Its fruits, also called bearberries, are edible and sometimes gathered for food. The leaves of the plant are used in herbal medicine.
