Buffalo State College, now calls itself Buffalo State. Other names used in the past include Buffalo State College and State University College at Buffalo. Buffalo State was founded in 1871 as Buffalo Normal School and later became Buffalo Normal and Training School. Since its inception as a training school for teachers, it has always been a college preparing elementary and secondary teachers.

Buffalo State is now a four-year liberal arts college with 130 programs in liberal arts and science, technology, and education. It continues its tradition of training teachers in many areas (Art, Technology, Social Science, Natural Sciences, Mathematics). Buffalo State is located on Elmwood Avenue in the northwest part of Buffalo, New York. The enrollment for the Fall 2003 semester was about 9,000 undergraduate and 2100 graduate students.
