A Clapper bridge is an ancient form of bridge found on the moors of Devon (Dartmoor and Exmoor). It is formed by large flat slabs of granite supported on stone piers. The finest examples, like that at Postbridge over the East Dart river, are wide enough for a horse and rider to cross, though generally they are close to a ford where carts could cross
