Coat of Arms of Austria
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Coat of Arms of Austria has been used since the end of World War I to symbolize Austria. The eagle is an old symbol of the Austrian Empire, but the rest of the elements indicate the change that occured upon the dissolution of that empire, and the formation of the independent state of Austria.

On the chest of the eagle is located the old shield of the Dutchy of Austria, this same design forms the basis for the flag of Austria. On top of the eagle's head rests a crown that is composed of bricks. This stands for all citizens of Austria. The sickle and hammer in the eagle's claws represent farmers and workers, respectively, and the broken chain between the two legs indicates freedom from the previous monarchy. It should be noted that while these are traditionally Communist symbols, Austria was not under a Communist government when these arms were adapted.
