In Italy, the commune (comune) is the basic administrative division, comprised in the provinces and the regions. At the 2001 census, there were 8,101 communes in Italy; they vary considerably in size and population.

For example, the commune of Rome (Lazio) has an area of 1,285.30 km2 and a population of 2,546,804, and is both the largest and the most populated commune in Italy; Fiera di Primiero, in the province of Trento, is only 0.10 km2 large, and Morterone (province of Lecco) has only 33 inhabitants.
