A cul-de-sac or dead-end is, in English, a street or road with only one entrance. While some are true cul-de-sacs, with no passage possible, others allow cyclists, pedestrians etc. to pass.
When progressing along a road, if there is a point at which there is no way out except the way one came in, then at the point, one is facing into a cul-de-sac.
In modern urban planning cul-de-sacs are deliberately created as they are invetably streets with very little traffic.
