Distance measuring equipment
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Distance measuring equipment, in aviation, is an additional aid in air navigation. A DME is a signal that is emitted by a VOR and allows the computer of an airplane to measure the distance between the station on the ground and the plane itself. Since this distance also incorporates the plane's altitude above the terrain, the true distance on the ground has to be calculated by taking the current altitude of the plane into account.
