A drummer is a musician who plays the drums, particularly the drum kit.
Drummers are traditionally the butt of other musicians' jokes. An example: "What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians? A drummer". Compare with the viola, the butt of classical musicians' jokes.
Percussion has been the longest form of music known to man. Man was making rythyms and sound before he could speak. People would play along to naturally ocurring events like thunderstorms. The drummer is the timekeeper for bands making him/her essential to the music.
In reality, good drummers are expert musicians with an acute ear for rhythm, who act as the driving rhythmic force for the entire musical group. Some cultures have drum music, music that is performed by drums alone.
