Emperor Heizei (平城天皇) was the 51st imperial ruler of Japan.
The year 809 saw the retirement of Heizei due to illness. Shortly after the enthronement of Saga he (Saga) was seriously ill and while he was recovering Heizei fomented a rebellion, which had to be put down by force and resulted in much bloodshed on both sides. In 822 ex-emperor Heizei became a Buddhist monk and received an intiation from Kukai.
