Europanto is a fictional constructed language, a linguistic jest largely consisting of English with a hodge-podge vocabulary from many European languages. It was created as a joke in 1996 by Diego Marani, a translator for the European Council of Ministers in Brussels. Marani created it in response to the perceived dominance of English, which has forced many non-native speakers to struggle with learning English as a second tongue. The language has neither a clear grammar nor a defined vocabulary.
The name is a combination of "European" and Esperanto, which is an actual constructed language. Marani writes regular newspaper columns about the "language" and has published a novel using it.
