A favicon is an icon set by a website. Web browsers such as recent versions of Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Opera, and Konqueror can make use of them. Usually they are set in the .ico format, but Mozilla for example can also support .gifs. Browsers that support favicons display them either next to the site's name in a bookmark list or in the browser's address bar.
