Flagler County is a
county located in the
U.S. state of
Florida. As of
2000, the population is 49,832. Its
county seat is
Bunnell, Florida6.
History
\nFlagler County was created in 1917. It was named for Henry M. Flagler, a famous
railroad builder.
Geography
\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,478
km² (571
mi²). 1,256 km² (485 mi²) of it is land and 222 km² (86 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.03% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of
2000, there are 49,832 people, 21,294 households, and 15,672 families residing in the county. The
population density is 40/km² (103/mi²). There are 24,452 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (50/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.27%

There are 21,294 households out of which 21.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.80% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 21.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.67.
In the county the population is spread out with 17.90% under the age of 18, 4.80% from 18 to 24, 20.30% from 25 to 44, 28.30% from 45 to 64, and 28.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 92.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $40,214, and the median income for a family is $45,502. Males have a median income of $31,184 versus $24,865 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,879. 8.70% of the population and 6.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.70% are under the age of 18 and 4.40% are 65 or older.
