Frank Black, American musican.

Frank Black (real name Charles Thompson III) was one of the founding members of the alt-rock band Pixies with Filipino guitarist Joey Santiago.

Frank Black studied in the University of Massachusetts, before taking off to Puerto Rico as part of an exchange program. It was here where he reportedly spent six months in an apartment with a "weird, psycho, gay room mate." Black's insuffecient grasp of the local language (which meant he couldn't even open a bank account to cash his cheques) forced him to make a decision whilst slumped in a local bar. He would either go to New Zealand to observe the passing of Haley's Comet or form a rock band.

After the rise and fall (due to internal tensions between Black and Kim Deal) of the Pixies, Black went on to record solo material with Eric Drew Feldman, and started a new band, Frank Black and the Catholics, in the late 1990s. He still enjoys moderate success, although he has never matched the success of the Pixies.

His albums since the breakup of the Pixies are:

  • "Frank Black" (1993)
  • "Teenager of the Year" (1994)
  • "The Cult of Ray" (1996)
  • "Frank Black and the Catholics" (1998)
  • "Pistolero" (1999)
  • "Dog in the Sand" (2000)
  • "Black Letter Days" (2002)
  • "Devil's Workshop" (2002)
  • "Show Me Your Tears" (2003)

It has recently been announced (late 2003) that he will tour with a reformed Pixies and possibly record a new album with them.
