Gateshead
shown within Tyne and Wear

Gateshead is a metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear in north-east England on the south side of the River Tyne opposite Newcastle upon Tyne.

The town was historically part of County Durham, but was combined along with the urban districts of Felling, Blaydon, Ryton and part of the rural district of Chester-le-Street into the new metropolitan borough of Gateshead in 1974. In 1986 the County Council of Tyne and Wear was abolished, and so Gateshead Council became a unitary authority. The district has some 190,000 inhabitants, and is said to have the biggest shopping centre in U.K.

Gateshead is on the Tyne and Wear Metro.
