Georg Jakob Steenke was born in 1801 in Koenigsberg, Prussia and died 1884 in Elbing, Prussia. His father and grandfather were connected to the sea trade.

Georg Steenke was a Prussian Royal Baurat and in 1833 he built a canal, the Seckenburger Kanal, in the Memel area. He designed the Oberland Kanal, which was built between 1844 - 1858 from Elbing to southern Prussia and was inaugurated in 1860.
