Gilchrist County is a
county located in the
U.S. state of
Florida. As of
2000, the population is 14,437. Its
county seat is
Trenton, Florida6.
History
\nGilchrist County was created in 1925. It was named for Albert W. Gilchrist,
Governor of Florida from
1909 to
1913.
Geography
\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 921
km² (355
mi²). 904 km² (349 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.85% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of
2000, there are 14,437 people, 5,021 households, and 3,715 families residing in the county. The
population density is 16/km² (41/mi²). There are 5,906 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.52%

There are 5,021 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.00% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 21.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.01.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 14.20% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 112.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 115.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $30,328, and the median income for a family is $34,485. Males have a median income of $27,359 versus $21,946 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,985. 14.10% of the population and 10.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.60% are under the age of 18 and 12.90% are 65 or older.
