Göran Persson

Göran Persson, Swedish politician, born 20 January, 1949 in Vingåker, Södermanlands län. The current Prime Minister of Sweden (since March 1996– ) and the leader of the Social Democratic Party.

Göran Persson has a background as a city council politician in the small municipality of Katrineholm, where he was the head of the municipal government or kommunalråd. In 1989 he was made Minister of Schools, until the election in 1991 when the Social Democrats was voted out of office. Upon returning to government in 1994 he was made Minister of Finance, a post he held until 1996, when he succeeded Ingvar Carlsson as Prime Minister and party leader.

Formerly married to Annika Persson 10 March 1995 (divorced December 2002). Married to Anitra Steen since 6 December 2003 –.
