The Great Kanto earthquake of September 1, 1923, recorded a magnitude of 7.9 wiping out the Japanese port city of Yokohama and half of neighboring Tokyo.

More than 140,000 lives were lost in the catastrophe. Along with many lost lives, many homes were destroyed. The damage is estimated to exceed one billion U.S. dollars at the time of the earthquake. 88 separate fires broke out and spread for days because the earthquake caused water mains to brake, making it very diffiuclt to put out the fires.
