The hammer and sickle is a symbol used to represent Communism and Communist political parties. It features a large sickle superimposed on a hammer. The two tools were chosen as symbols of the working class, symbolising the unity between agricultural and industrial workers. The star, when present, represents the rule of the Communist Party.
The hammer and sickle featured prominently on the flagss of the republics of the Soviet Union and on the flags of some Communist Parties.
