There have been a number of ships that have borne the name Triumph in the Royal Navy. The current Triumph is a nuclear powered Trafalgar-class fleet submarine, one of the most powerful types in the world.
HMS Triumph was a 74-gun third-rate ship-of-the-line built at Woolwich. She participated in the American Revolution and was involved in the Battle of Camperdown under the command of Captain Essington. She was broken up in the early 1800s.
She was a Swiftsure-class ironclad battleship that was launched in 1870 and commissioned in 1873. She had a displacement of 6910 tons, a length of 291 ft and an armament of 10 x 9-inch guns, 4 x 6-inch guns, but once refitted in 1892, her secondary armament was decreased to 4 x 5-inch guns.
In 1882, there was an explosion onboard Triumph that heavily damaged the battleship, killing three crew, two during the explosion, and one who later died of horrific wounds he had received during the tragic accident. Seven other crew were injured, some seriously.
In 1892, she was placed in Reserve. She became a depot ship at the beginning of the 20th Century. She became a training ship three years later at Chatham. She was then renamed Tenedos the following year to free the name for a new pre-dreadnought. In 1912 she was again renamed, this time Indus IV. She became a stores ship at Invergordon and then was renamed Algiers in 1916. She was scrapped in 1921.
HMS Triumph (1903) was part of a class of two pre-dreadnoughts known as the Swiftsure-class, commissioned in 1904. She was actively involved in the First World War, but was sunk by U-21 in 1915, with the loss of 73 men.
HMS Triumph was a Triton-class submarine. She was laid down by Vickers at Barrow and launched in September 1938. During WWII, Triumph had a relatively active, yet tragic career. In early 1941, she sunk the Italian submarine Salpe off the port of Alexandria, Egypt. In August of that year, she then torpedoed the Italian cruiser Bolzano, which suffered much damage, the ship however survived. Bolzano was later captured by the Germans after the surrender of Italy in 1943, while she was under repair from the damage she had received from Triumph. The cruiser was later sunk in 1944.
Triumph was also used for much more covert operations, such as landing agents in German occupied nations. She undertook one such mission in December 1941, in which she successfully landed agents in Greece. She was lost just over a week later, off Greece, after a collision with a mine in early January 1942. All fifty nine crew were lost.
This HMS Triumph (R16) was a Colossus-class light fleet carrier commissioned in 1946. She served in the Korean War. Scrapped in 1981.
The current HMS Triumph (S93) is a Trafalgar-class fleet submarine that was commissioned in commissioned in October 1993. Was involved in Operation Veritas, the war on Afghanistan.HMS Triumph (1764-?)
