Immigration and Naturalization Service
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was a part of the United States Department of Justice which used to handle legal and illegal immigration and naturalization; now known as INS (Legacy).

Most of its functions have now been divided into two Bureaus (1) Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) handling immigration processing and citizenship services (i.e. naturalization, but not the Border Patrol; on November 1, 2003 its name was changed to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The border and enforcement activities of the INS will be handled by the (2) Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (BICE) of the Directorate of Border and Transportation Security (DBTS) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
