Indiana Territory was an incorporated territory of the United States from July 4, 1800--when it was separated from the Northwest Territory--until December 11, 1816 when Indiana was admitted into the Union as the 19th U.S. state.
The original limits of the territory were all of the Northwest Territory except the Ohio lands. Michigan Territory was separated from Indiana Territory on 1805, Illinois Territory was separated out in 1809. Indiana Territory originally had just three counties: St. Clair, Randolph and Knox. Knox County contained all of present-day Indiana.
From 1800 to 1813, the territorial capital was Vincennes.
