Iyad Allawi is a member of the Interim Iraq Governing Council, created following the United States's 2003 invasion of Iraq. A Shia Muslim and medical doctor, Allawi organized the Iraq national Accord, a group consisting mainly of military defectors from Saddam Hussein's Iraq, dedicated to attempting to instigate a coup from within the Iraqi army. Allwai held the presidency of the interin governing council during October of 2003.
