Joan Didion (born December 6, 1935) is an American writer. She was born in California and lives in New York.

Didion is the author of five novels and seven books of non-fiction. Her collections of essays, Slouching Toward Bethlehem (1968) and The White Album (1979) made her a famous as an observer of American politics and culture

She contributes regularly to The New York Review of Books and The New Yorker. Didion also collaborated with her late husband, writer John Gregory Dunne, on screenplays.
