Joe is a nickname for coffee. The nickname is derived from the name of Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, who in 1913 banned alcohol from being served on U.S. Navy warships. The sailors began to drink more coffee, which they then nicknamed "Joe."
Joe is also used, mostly in the United States, as a common placeholder name for a person, such as "your average Joe" or "Joe sixpack".
Joe is also a text editor for Unix.
