John Riley, also known as John O'Riley, was one of the irishmen who deserted the american army, and he did so before the war was declared, thus avoiding execution in the Court Martial held in México City in 1847.
John O'Riley and Patrick Dalton formed the "Batallón de San Patricio", or the "San Patricios", and they fought in Churubusco, where they were captured.
