Karo, translated as house elder, is the top ranking offical in daimyo in Japan.
In the Edo period, Sankin Koutai required each daimyo to place karo both in Edo and its homeland. Karo in the homeland is called "Jodai karo'' while one in Edo is called "Edo Karo."
