Bloom in February
Georgetown, South Carolina
Henbit, Lamium amplexicaule, is an herbacious plant in the Lamiaceae family that is native to eastern North America It blooms very early in northern areas, and blooms for most of the winter and the early spring in the south. It propagates freely by seed and is regarded as a minor weed. Sometimes entire fields will be reddish-purple with its bloom before spring cultivation.
Henbit, where common, is an important nectar and pollen plant for bees, especially honeybees where it helps start the spring buildup.
