Linear particle accelerator

The four basic components of an X-ray producing machine include:

  1. a source of electrons
  2. a vacuum within which the electrons are accelerated
  3. an energy source which cause the electrons to be accelerated
  4. a target made of a high atomic number, high melting point metal

In the linear accelerator, these components are specifically:
  1. an electron gun such as is found in the common TV
  2. a long (0.5-1.5 metre) hollow copper pipe with various tuning compartments.
  3. microwaves such as those used to warm dinner, but tuned to the frequency of the electron.
  4. a tungsten target.

Of course there are many more components and control systems associated with the machine than these but these are the basics.
