Liu is a Chinese family name. Since the English transliteration depicts several chinese characters, liu represents family names 劉 (Lau in Cantonese Chinese), 柳, 留 and 六. In Cantonese transliteration, Liu is another Chinese name 廖.

劉 is extremely popular. They were the ruling family of Han Dynasty-a high time in history of China.
