Lorne Nystrom, a politician has been a member of the Canadian House of Commons since 1968, except during the period 1993-1997. He was the youngest Canadian ever elected to Parliament.
He has run for the leadership of the New Democratic Party three times. In 1995, Nystrom was believed to be a leading contender, but he in fact finished last on the first ballot, behind Svend Robinson and Alexa McDonough, and was dropped. (Although Robinson had finished first on that ballot, he conceded to McDonough before the second ballot as he felt that Nystrom's support would have gone almost entirely to McDonough, giving her the victory.)
Nystrom ran for the NDP leadership again in 2003, but was not able to attract a wide base of support.
Nystrom has been one of the strongest advocates of proportional representation in Canada, and believes the the NDP should follow the third way example of Tony Blair to grow popular support for this social democratic party.
