Malice Mizer is a visual kei formed in 1992 by Mana and Kozi. The group was first marketed as a classical goth group. The first members were Tetsu (vocals), Kozi (guitar, synthesizer), Mana (guitar, synthesizer), Yu~ki (bassist) and Gaz (drummer). About one year later, after their first indie release, Tetsu was fired and Gaz left.
After this Malice Mizer was in a desperate situation, with only two guitarists and a bassist. Later, Kami and Gackt had joined. When Gackt became the vocalist, their music and style changed into a romantic look and style with their gothic feel. They signed with Nippon:Columbia and sold 3 albums within 4 years. Tours erupted, drawing loyal fans who cosplayed as the members and, stage plays, fanservice, and dances made up the lives. Songs such as Ma cherie, Gekka no Yasoukyoku, Le ciel, and Au revior were very different from most visual kei bands, but, that was Mana's intention.
In 1999, Gackt left Malice Mizer to begin a solo career. Even if this wasn't enough, on June 21, 1999 Kami died in his sleep due to a brain hemorrhage. The band recorded an album dedicated to him and Gackt made a song for him (U+K). The song U+K stood for Ukyou Kamamura, the real name of the great drummer.
In 2000, Malice Mizer recuited Klaha as their newest vocalist. Shue, a support member, became their new drummer. Shue was never an actual member because it would be disrespectful for Kami, their eternal drummer. The style changed again to pure goth with sad lyrics making you think there was no happiness in their lives. Sadly, Malice Mizer came an end in December of 2001. They disbanded on good terms to work on different activites. Mana has formed Moi Dix Mois, Kozi has joined Eve of Destiny, and Klaha has taken Gackt's path, starting a solo career.
