Mame is a story retold in several incarnations.

Patrick Dennis (1921 - 1976) born in Chicago as Edward Everett Tanner, III, wrote an autobiographal novel, Auntie Mame about his relationship with his mad-cap aunt, who raised him.

Auntie Mame was adapted for the stage by authors Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, based on Patrick Dennis's novel. It ran in New York from 31 October, 1956 - 28 June, 1958.

Mame a musical adapation of the play Auntie Mame was produced in 1966 with book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, and lyrics and music by Jerry Herman. It was revived in 1983 starring Angela Lansbury, who had originated the title role.

In 1966 both Bobby Darin and Louis Armstrong got into the United States and Canada hit charts with cover records of the show's title song.

There have been two movie adaptations of the story, one non-musical with Rosalind Russell in 1958, and one musical with Lucille Ball in 1974.
