There are ten functional genomics projects in which the GSC is involved currently. This large number and the space constraints of this document prohibit a detailed description of each of them and so I reproduce here a summary of my most favourite one. This project “From sequence to function: Gene expression profiling of programmed cell death” is led by Dr. Sharon Gorski, one of the post-doctoral fellows at the Genome Sciences Centre. Programmed cell death (PCD) is a highly conserved and genetically regulated form of cell death that plays important roles in animal development, homeostasis, and disease. PCD functions to delete unnecessary cells and structures, adjust cell numbers, sculpt tissues and remove damaged or harmful (e.g. pre-cancerous) cells.
