The Mercury Comet was an automobile produced by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company.
It was introduced in 1960 and ceased production with the 1975 model.
Originally planned as an Edsel, it was not officially a Mercury until 1961. From 1961 to 1964 it was based on the Ford Falcon, from 1965 to 1969 it was based on the Ford Fairlane, and was offered with Ford's highest performance muscle car engines of the day, and from 1970 onwards, it was based on the Ford Maverick. The first and third generation Comets were considered compact cars, the second was a midsize.
