Also called the Twin Cities. Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota. St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota. The region is the 15th-largest metropolitan area in the United States as of the 2000 census. The population of the Twin Cities area is nearly three million people (2,968,805). The Minneapolis-St.Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area comprises thirteen counties:

However, many people refer to an older seven-county area when they speak of the Twin Cities. These seven counties are: Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington in Minnesota.
