Mogens Lykketoft suceeded former Danish prime minister, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen as leader of the social democratic party, (Socialdemokratiet) in december 2002.
In the cabinet formed by a coalition of the Social Liberal Party, (Det Radikale Venstre) and the social democrats, that reigned from 1993 to 2001, he held positions as financial minister and minister of foreign affairs.
