The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the research agency of the United States Department of Justice. NIJ sponsors criminological research and improvements in criminal justice and police technology. NIJ has developed a standard for police bullet-proof vests.
It is notable among governmental research organizations because it is headed by a political appointee rather than by a scientist or a member of the civil service.
