Nomos is a Greek word for province or prefecture (nomOs, νομός), the administrative division immediately below the peripheries of Greece. There are 51 nomoi, distributed among the 13 peripheries. A prefect (nomarches) is elected.

Nomos is also the etymological origin for the word nome, conventionally used to designate the subdivisions of Ancient Egypt.

Nomos also means "law" (nOmos, νόμος). It is an etymon of astronomy ("laws of the stars")
