A notation can be used in several contexts:

1. In musical composition, the music is represented by musical notation
2. In Mathematics, Numeral systems, or notation for writing numbers
3. In analytic geometry, Cartesian Coordinate System
4. For the indigenous peoples of the Americas, communication using Census Quipu or khipu (knotted ropes)
5. Ishango Bone
6. Scientific Notation
