During World War II, Operation Span was a deception operation in support of the 1944 invasion of southern France (Operation Dragoon).
This operation consisted of fake amphibious landings on Corsica and along the Italian coast immediately following the actual invasion. This tied down German troops and prevented their deployment against the beachhead.
