Cleanliness

Nurse observe the rules of cleanliness in the sickroom at all times. They wash their hands throughly under running water before and after caring for paient and after handling any wastes.

Records

In order to have accurate information for the doctor, nurses keep daily records in a looseleaf notebook or on a separate, dated sheet of paper. Such record tells when treatments and medicines ordered by the doctor were given. It may also include the patent's temperatures and any other information the doctor ask for.

Temperature

The doctor may ask the nurse to take the patient's temperature several times a day. The normal body temperature several times a day. The normal body temperature is 37 degrees celsius (98.6 degrees fahrenheit), but it may vary in healthy person from 36 to 37 degrees celsius (97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit). A higher temperature is called a fever. Any sudden risein the patient's temperature should be reported to the doctor immediately. Body temperature may be taken by mouth or by rectum, or a thermometer may be placed in the armpit. It takes three minutes to take a temperature by mouth or rectum and ten minutes by armpit.

medicine

A medicine is never given un less it has been ordered by the doctor. When the nurse gives a medicine,the doctors instructions are followed exactly because the patient may be greatly harmed if an error is made.

Diet

The sick person diet is important, for eating the right foods helps a patient get well faster. The doctor may place the patient on a regular, light, soft, or liquid diet. A person on a regular diet can eat all the foods eaten normally on a light diet the patient may have such foods as ground meat, chicken, fish, potatoes, rice, strained vegetables, custards, and puddings. no rich, spicy foods, fried foods; or raw fruitsand vegetables are allowed. A soft diet includes such foods as toast, ceral, eggs, potatoes, custards, and ice cream. A liquid diet may consist only of clear liquids, such as soup, tea, and juices. The doctor may also permit thin ceral, eggnog, and puddings. Often the sick person has little appetite, so trays should look inviting.
