In many militaries, a private (short for "private soldier"), is a soldier of the lowest military rank.
In the United States Army, there are two kinds of privates; the junior rank is simply "private", abbreviated "PVT", and the senior is a private first class, abbreviated "PFC".
In the British Army, many regiments and corps have distinctive (and descriptive) names for this rank, such as Trooper (Tpr), Sapper (Spr), and Craftsman (Cfn).
Private is also the title of a European porn magazine.
