1948: presidential candidate again. Disputed result: congress declares him the winner over Otilio Ulate Blanco. José Figueres Ferrer heads a popular revolt. Government overthrown. Calderón Guardia flees to Nicaragua (launches failed invasion of CR), then to Mexico. Returns to Costa Rica in 1958, serves as a parliamentary deputy.
